Heavy Link Pec Crusher

Reaction Sequence · Mechanism

So you thought regular bench pressing was tough? Allow me to introduce you to its unhinged cousin that involves chains, cables, and standing on a bench like some kind of fitness pirate. You hook those chains up to cable handles, plant your feet on the flat bench, and hold your arms straight out with palms facing down — perpendicular to the ground, looking like you're about to take flight. Spoiler: you won't take flight, but your pecs will definitely take off.

Now you bend those elbows and lower the chains down. As you descend, portions of the chain pile up on the floor, actually making the weight LIGHTER at the bottom. Then, as you press back up and lock out your elbows, more chain lifts off the ground, making it HEAVIER at the top. It's like the exercise is trolling you — easy where you're weak, brutal where you're strong. Your pectoral muscles get hammered through the entire range with the kind of accommodating resistance that makes standard dumbbell presses look like a warm-up joke.

This is an intermediate move for a reason. The balance component of standing on a bench while pressing chains that are constantly shifting in weight forces your stabilizers to work overtime. Your core clenches, your shoulders lock in, and your chest does the heavy lifting — literally. It's a weightlifting specialty move that builds explosive pushing power and gives you a pump so intense you'll want to flex in every reflective surface you pass for the next three hours.
