The Martial Arts Cable Gut Throw

Reaction Sequence · Mechanism

I'm not saying this exercise will make you a judo master, but I'm also not NOT saying that. The Cable Judo Flip is what happens when a core workout and a martial arts throw collide in the best possible way. It's rotational, it's explosive, and it makes you feel like you could flip an opponent twice your size — even if the only thing you're actually flipping is a cable attachment.

Attach a rope to the tower and set the cable to the lowest position. Stand sideways to the machine with a wide, athletic stance and grab the rope with both hands. Now here's where it gets fun: rotate your entire torso away from the pulley while throwing the rope up and over your shoulder like you're launching an invisible opponent across the mat.

Shift your weight between your feet as you twist and crunch forward, pulling the cable down and across your body with authority. This is not a gentle, contemplative movement — it's aggressive, it's powerful, and your obliques should be screaming. Return to the start under control and repeat until you can't twist anymore.

Then switch sides and punish the other half of your midsection. Because symmetry matters, even in simulated martial arts.

This exercise is a fantastic way to build rotational core strength, which is what actually matters in real life and sports. Crunches are fine, but twisting power is what throws a punch, swings a bat, or helps you shovel snow without throwing out your back. Do the Judo Flip. Your obliques will thank you, and your imaginary opponents will fear you.
