Lie on your back and prop those feet up on an exercise ball with your knees bent at 90 degrees. Your toes should be touching each other, pointing inward like they're sharing a secret. Place your hands lightly on either side of your head — NOT interlocked behind your neck, because this is an ab workout, not a chiropractic appointment waiting to happen.
Now press your lower back HARD into the floor. Like, really commit to it. Imagine there's a bug under your spine and you're trying to end its career. This isolation trick is what turns a mediocre ab exercise into a precision strike on your midsection.
Lift your shoulders off the floor — only about four inches, we're not trying to sit up here — while keeping that lower back glued to the ground. Exhale as you rise, squeeze those abs at the top like you're trying to crush a grape between your stomach muscles, and hold for one second. Then lower back down with control as you inhale. No momentum, no jerking, no using your hip flexors to cheat the movement.
The exercise ball adds a stability challenge that regular floor crunches can only dream of, forcing your core to engage on a whole new level. This beginner move looks deceptively easy, but do 20 controlled reps and you'll understand why your abs have been ignoring you all these years — they were just waiting for the right exercise to come along and wake them up.
