The Cross-Chin Hammer Swinger

Reaction Sequence · Mechanism

Stand up tall with a dumbbell in each hand, arms hanging at your sides, palms facing inward like you're about to applause but just... forgot how. This neutral grip is what makes this a "hammer" curl — because you're about to bring the thunder, obviously.

Now here's the twist — literally. Without rotating your arm at all, you curl the dumbbell from your right hand across your body toward your LEFT shoulder. It's like you're trying to high-five someone standing diagonally in front of you, except the high-five is a heavy piece of iron and the person is imaginary. Touch the top of the dumbbell to your shoulder, hold that contraction for a second, and really feel that bicep and brachialis light up like a Christmas tree.

Then lower it back down the same way — controlled, no rushing — and switch to the left arm curling toward your right shoulder. Keep alternating until both arms have done their fair share of suffering. And trust me, they WILL suffer.

What makes this move special is that it hits both the biceps and the brachialis — that little muscle underneath that makes your arms look thicker than a dictionary. This beginner exercise is simple to learn but incredibly effective for building arms that look like they were designed by someone who skipped the "subtle" setting entirely. Cross-body action means a slightly different angle of attack, and your arms will thank you. Eventually. Maybe after they stop hurting.
