The Cross-Wired Sideways Sky Reach

Reaction Sequence · Mechanism

This is one of those exercises that makes you look like you're performing some elaborate gym ritual, but trust me, the results are absolutely worth the confused stares. You sit on the edge of a bench between two opposing low pulleys, grab the left handle with your right hand and vice versa — yeah, it's a crossover situation — and then you raise your arms out to the sides like you're about to take flight.

Lean forward with a flat back, resting your torso on your thighs, arms extended with palms facing each other and a soft bend in the elbows. The cables pass under your knees, which is already a wild visual. Now, keeping your arms essentially stationary, you lift your upper arms out and up until they're level with your shoulders. Boom — lateral raises from a seated position with constant cable tension.

The seated factor is a game-changer because it eliminates every ounce of cheating. No swinging, no using momentum, no "I'll just bounce it up with my lower back" nonsense. You are locked in, and your side delts have no choice but to do the work or face public humiliation.

Keep those upper arms perpendicular to your torso and maintain that fixed elbow angle throughout. This isn't the exercise where you go mega-heavy — it's the one where you chase the burn, control every millimeter, and build shoulders that look like they belong on a Greek statue. The constant tension from the cables makes every rep feel like the last one.
