The Upper-Back Rowboat With Elbows Skyward
Reaction Sequence · Mechanism
So you think you know rows? You've done your standard cable rows, your barbell rows, your fancy one-arm rows? Great. Now throw all that out the window because this one's different — you're rowing with your elbows pointing UP like you're trying to signal a helicopter, and it completely changes the party.
Park yourself on the seated row station, but instead of the usual close-grip attachment, you grab a rope with an overhand hold. Your arms start extended and parallel to the deck, lower back upright, hips slid back with a gentle knee bend. Now pull that rope toward your upper chest — just below the neck — while flaring those elbows to the sides like a chicken deciding it wants to take flight.
The beauty here is what's getting worked: your rear delts and upper back are getting absolutely WALLOPED while your lats take a back seat. This isn't a lat exercise pretending to hit your rear shoulders — this is the real deal, targeting the muscles that give your upper body that 3D thickness from every angle.
Keep those upper arms horizontal throughout the whole show. If your elbows drop, you've just turned this into a regular row, and that's like ordering a sundae and throwing away the cherry. Pull until your elbows travel slightly past your torso, squeeze everything at the top, then let your arms stretch forward again as you inhale. Repeat until your upper back looks like a mountain range.
