The Rubber Band Chest Hugger
Reaction Sequence · Mechanism
First things first: find yourself a sturdy pole or anchor point and wrap an exercise band around it like you're tying up a very reluctant horse. Then face AWAY from the pole, grab both handles, and step forward until there's enough tension in the band to make you question your life decisions. Raise your arms out to the sides until your body forms a giant letter T — like you're about to hug the entire world.
Keep a slight bend in those elbows, because locked-out elbows at the end of a band stretch is a recipe for a bad time. This is your starting position, and from here, you bring both arms together in front of your chest in a big sweeping semicircular motion, like you're giving the universe the most aggressive hug it's ever received. Exhale on the way in, squeeze those pecs like you're trying to crush coal into diamonds, and hold the contraction for a glorious second.
Then slowly return to the T-position as you inhale, feeling the band pull your arms back like it's trying to reenact a crucifixion scene. Control the movement — don't let the band yank you around like a ragdoll.
This beginner chest exercise is perfect for when you don't have access to cables but still want that fly-like squeeze at the end. The band provides variable resistance that increases as you stretch it, which means the hardest part is right where your pecs are strongest. It's science, it's simple, and it's surprisingly savage.
