The Sky-Reaching Stomach Squeezer

Reaction Sequence · Mechanism

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent at roughly 60 degrees — that sweet spot between "casual lounging" and "about to do something unpleasant." Plant your feet flat on the floor, then reach your arms straight up overhead and cross your palms like you're about to dive into a swimming pool. Except there's no pool. There's only pain. Welcome to the starting position.

Now here's the deal: you curl your upper body forward, lifting your shoulder blades off the floor, while keeping those arms perfectly aligned with your head, neck, and shoulders. They do NOT move forward. They stay in formation like soldiers who have been given very strict orders. Your arms move WITH your torso, not ahead of it — this is a team effort, not a solo performance.

Exhale as you crunch upward, squeeze those abs at the top like you're trying to fold yourself in half, and hold the contraction for a solid second. Really feel those upper abdominals firing like they've been lit on fire — because they basically have. Then lower yourself back down slowly as you inhale, fighting gravity the whole way like it's a personal rival.

The overhead arm position makes this ab move significantly harder than a standard crunch, because your abs have to work overtime against the longer lever. It's a beginner exercise that punches WAY above its weight class, and your midsection will be feeling it for days.
