The Human T-Rex Endurance Challenge
Reaction Sequence · Mechanism
Welcome to the exercise where you stand still and hold heavy things out to your sides until your arms file a restraining order against you. In the strongman world, they use actual implements like axes, hammers, and other implements of medieval warfare — but for practice, dumbbells will do. The feeling is different with the real gear, kind of like how driving a go-kart is technically driving but it's NOT the same as driving a Ferrari.
You stand tall, raise both arms out to your sides until they're parallel to the floor, and HOLD. That's it. That's the whole exercise. No reps, no movement, just pure, unadulterated suffering. Your arms should look like they're forming a perfect T-shape, and in competition, judges will buzz you the SECOND those arms dip below parallel. So you'd better keep them up like your dignity depends on it — because it does.
Choose a weight that makes you fail within 30 to 60 seconds. If you can hold it longer, it's too light and you're not suffering enough. Your shoulders will start shaking like a washing machine on the spin cycle, your traps will beg for mercy, and your face will contort into expressions you didn't know existed.
This beginner-strongman hold is a shoulder endurance test that also builds mental toughness and the ability to smile through pain. It's simple, it's brutal, and it'll make you appreciate the simple joy of putting your arms down.
